Cooperstown Conference
Four SSCS student-athletes joined 400 of their peers from 60 area school districts at the 10th Annual Student-Athlete Leadership Conference on March 7. The daylong conference entitled “Respect: It Goes Both Ways” was hosted by the Cooperstown CSD at the Clark Sports Center. Attending were juniors Michael Cashman and Peyton Barbic, sophomore Devin Tissiere and Freshman Isabella Cornwell.
As part of the program, athletic directors and teachers from the participating schools attended professional development seminars at the National Baseball Hall of Fame, experiencing the museum’s award-winning curriculum. Included in this were SSCS Athletic Director/coach Chris Smith and teacher/coach Samuel Bonderoff.
The conference was sponsored by Central New York businesses and featured several workshops and motivational speakers including Chris Herren, former NBA player with the Boston Celtics and Denver Nuggets, ESPN “30 for 30 Speaker” and founder of the Herren Project.
Section IV Binghamton Conference
A group of SSCS student athletes joined more than 500 of their peers, coaches and administrators March 18 for the Section IV Student Leadership and Sportsmanship Conference held at the Binghamton Forum. Attending with SSCS Athletic Director/Coach Chris Smith and Coach Randi Korona were Ava Jump, Kaylee Crewell, Clayton Van Patten and Tyler Lyon. The conference is hosted each year by the Section but is run by the student-athletes themselves. Jump, Crewell and Lyon are all part of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee representing the Tri Valley League. During the conference, student-athletes broke out in different sessions during the morning to share ideas on team bonding, team management and the pressures of being a student athlete. They also hosted guest speakers in the afternoon who talked about leadership and finding a path to health and happiness.
