Congratulations to Elizabeth Gokool for winning the annual Sharon Springs School Spelling Bee on January 24. Ten students from grades 4-8 participated in the round-by-round “spell-off,” which is part of the Scripps National Spelling Bee and sponsored locally by the Sharon Springs Historical Society.

The spelling contest came down to a final-two faceoff between Gokool (grade 6) and Bailey Puding (grade 5). The two went back and forth for several rounds with Gokool spelling the word “P-A-T-I-O” for the victory. Jack Flanagan (grade 8) finished third overall. With this win, Gokool will represent SSCS at the Capital District Regional Spelling Bee later this year.

Other SSCS student participants included Jordyn Crewell (grade 8), William Kane and Trever Killenberger (grade 7), Lillie Yacobucci (grade 6), Colton Starr (grade 5), and Kaden Korona and Bastian Lynk (grade 4).

The 2024 SSCS Spelling Bee Advisor/Organizer was secondary English teacher Jennifer Field. Mr. Scimeca was the announcer and word pronouncer. Spelling Bee judges were Mr. Yorke, Mrs. Lyon and Mrs. Jones.
