Congratulations to SSCS sophomore, Yasmin Issa, for winning the George S. and Stella M. Knight Essay Contest among all high school students in New York State.
The essay contest is sponsored by the Empire State Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (ESS-SAR) and is open to all grade 9-12 students attending home schools, public, parochial, or private high schools.
To participate, students wrote and submit an original 800- to 1,200-word essay based on an event, person, philosophy or ideal associated with the American Revolution, Declaration of Independence, or the framing of the United States Constitution. Each essay was judged based upon its historical accuracy, clarity, organization, grammar and spelling, and documentation.
SSCS high school students were encouraged and supported by Social Studies teacher David Nedelsky and English teacher Jennifer Field to participate in this opportunity, said Superintendent/Principal Thomas Yorke, “and it was Yasmin’s hard work and talent that has been recognized.”
Her state-level-winning essay will now be entered into the National Sons of the American Revolution contest as one of a possible 67 entries to be considered for national honors.
“On behalf of the committee of judges for the ESS-SAR, I want to congratulate Yasmin for her quality essay, and we wish her well at the national competition,” said The Honorable Judge Richard C. Smith. “Congratulations and our best wishes.”
