SSCS 9th graders had their English class novel come to life with a field trip Monday to the Schoharie County Courthouse. Students in teacher Randi Korona’s class just finished reading a Walter Dean Myers novel called Monster.

The book is about a 16-year-old boy who is on trial, accused of being a lookout in a robbery. The novel explores themes of choices and consequences, and introduces readers to the many careers that exist within the fields of law and criminal justice. Monday’s experience helped bring the book to life as students witnessed firsthand the interactions between the judge, lawyers, and clients as they proceed through the weekly criminal calendar.

During their stay at the courthouse, the high school freshmen were able to talk to and question Judge MacAllister, District Attorney Susan Mallory, Schoharie County Clerk Larry Caza, probation officers, deputies, security guards, etc.
