Welcome to a New School Year!

on July 31, 2017

SSCS will be open and ready for students to return on Wednesday, September 6th.  This summer, we have been busy preparing for opening day and we are pleased to provide you with this “Back to School” edition of our newsletter to make sure that you have all the information you will need for a smooth start. As always, thanks to our custodial staff, the hallways and classrooms are clean, waxed and ready for another school year!

A new colorful and up to date elementary hallway is waiting for students.  Designed by our Art Teacher Ms. Sue Futerko, she explains that the pattern “utilizes elements of color flow based on the color spectrum and rainbow.  The Greek Key is an ancient pattern symbolizing infinity and unity which leads each color into the next color as you continue down the hallway.”  In addition, she created a large SSCS to greet students entering the hallway, and then a mosaic of the front of the school with two maples  closer to the end of the hallway.  Please feel free to stop in and visit to admire when you have the opportunity!

Be sure to stay connected with us all year long right on your smartphone through our SSCS District App! This completely free app can be downloaded for smart phones and tablets in the  Google Play store (Android) and on the App Store/iTunes (Apple).  Our app is an important, multi-faceted communications tool that integrates student information, district news, emergency alerts…all the information you need to know right in the palm of your hand.  Users will be able to receive phone calls, e-mails and push notifications from the district and can easily follow district news through the app. The SSCS District App gives parents access to their student’s information securely, as it integrates with the district’s student information system, Schoology, and My School Bucks.   It is important to note that with the transition to the mobile app notification system, SSCS will eventually replace the current email text notification system.

SSCS will begin to phase out the SSCS text notificationAgain, please download the app for free in the  Google Play store (Android) and App Store/iTunes (Apple) so that you can verify and update parent contact information as to not miss important messages from the district.   Search app store for “Sharon Springs Central School” and look for the Spartan head!   Finally, if you are a parent of a student in the district, you will automatically be enrolled in the new emergency notification system to receive phone calls from the district.  You do not need to have a smart phone or a tablet to receive emergency alerts or phone calls from the district. However, if your contact information has changed, please let your school office know immediately so that our records can be updated.

Academically, again our focus is on providing each child with new challenges that result in a rewarding school experience. Throughout our curriculum, technology will be used as a learning tool by teachers to enhance the overall learning experience and broaden students 21st century skills.  Expect expanded use of Schoology in grades 6 -12.  This password protected portal allows parental access to classroom materials, class calendar and assignments, and class grades. The Schoology App is available for all devices including Apple and Android operating systems. Schoology login support for parents is available on the SSCS website and a special parent orientation is planned for Thursday, September 21st between 5:30 and 6:30 (you can stop in anytime within this hour to get all you need to login and get access to your child’s grades and daily assignments).

School Supply Lists, up to date Calendar of Events, Student Code of Conduct, Dignity for All Students and Bullying Reporting information can all be found on the school website at sharonsprings.org.  Our main goal at SSCS, as always, is to create and maintain an educational environment in which all students feel safe and able to concentrate on learning and being able to take advantage of educationally related opportunities.

Our staff is eager to reconnect with your children and help them in any way that they can, be it academically or extracurricular. The goal of educating each child to his or her fullest potential is one that the faculty and staff of SSCS take seriously. With your continued support, we move forward into the school year to accomplish this goal.
