Fifth-Graders Use Math Skills to Bring Robot to Life

on February 1, 2014

Sharon Springs fifth grade students had the opportunity to work with an extraordinary guest this past fall.

“Ricky the Robot” visited from the Capital Region BOCES’ Northeastern Regional Information Center Model Schools Program.

Students used special software and their math skills to create a program for “Ricky” to execute. They had to measure in meters and create a mathematical pattern—or maze—for Ricky to walk through. Students were then able to run their program and watch him move through the maze, dance, and even speak as they had programmed him to do. Elementary students were then invited in to watch Ricky walk, dance, talk and “high-five.”
